A Documentary Photographer’s Field Guide to Maine

Maine is not a small subject.

It has more coastline than California. A music scene that punches above its weight. Events, venues, locations, and light that most photographers in this state have never thought to write down. Not seriously. Not in a way that’s useful to anyone else.

Between the Moments is where I keep field notes. Firsthand accounts from a working documentary photographer who has been in the rooms, at the events, on the locations — camera in hand, eyes open. What the light does at a specific venue. What it takes to shoot a concert at a 200-cap club in Portland with no photo pit and a disco floor as your primary light source. What a location looks like before you commit to it. What Maine looks and feels like to someone whose job is to document it honestly.
